My first taste of tutoring came while I was studying for my A-Levels, when I was nominated by my teachers for the position of Subject Ambassador for both the Maths and Economics Departments, tasked with tutoring struggling students in these subjects every week. I enjoyed it so much that despite the heavy workload I decided to keep this up while studying at Oxford, where I devised study resources and ran revision sessions for younger students in my subject, Psychology and Philosophy.
Since graduating, I have accrued many years’ experience as both a private tutor offering one-on-one help and as a teacher in three top London schools, in subjects ranging from 7+/11+ all the way to A-level and university level exams. This also includes assistance navigating the application processes for universities in the US and UK (especially Oxbridge) - both of which I went through myself - including personal statements, interviews, and entrance exams. Each year, my students have met or surpassed their predicted results, some have come top of their year, and many have gained offers from Oxbridge and other leading universities.
Originally hailing from rainy Manchester, I moved to Florida when I was five years old but returned to the UK after a decade to start high school, where I studied A-levels in Maths, Further Maths, Economics, English Literature, and Art (AS). In 2015, I graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford with a 2:1 in Psychology and Philosophy and began work as a tutor in London.
“I really enjoyed working with Frazier and can't thank him enough for helping me to achieve an offer from Cambridge. I would definitely recommend him to anyone going through uni applications or anything else for that matter!”
“Frazier gave me very constructive feedback and guided me through ways of making my personal statement more coherent and developed. Thank you for all your help”
“Frazier is a great teacher and the class was a success. I would like to continue lessons with him in the future!”
“‘My daughter enjoyed working with Frazier. She was new to academic study of the subject but she found his approach engaging and he was able to motivate her to cover the necessary ground in a short period of time despite her organisational difficulties. He was very responsive to feedback, responding well to changes in the detail of original brief. His objective was to prepare her for an Oxbridge interview and she was subsequently offered a place, so we can thoroughly recommend him.’”
I believe it is the job of a tutor to guide students as they develop the skills and confidence to become better independent learners. My ultimate aim is to help students reach the point where they no longer need my help.
No two students have the same needs, and some are more obvious than others. I start by making a full assessment of their strengths and weaknesses in each subject, then work together with them on a plan of action to tackle these challenges, whether it centres on a lack of confidence, confusion over exam technique, or a misunderstanding of the fundamentals.
Sometimes a student needs pushing to meet their potential, and sometimes a student needs support to cope with the pressure of exams; I tailor each lesson to get the most out of each student in a focused but enjoyable way that is always building towards achieving their personal goals.
I’m a writer, mainly for theatre and film, so when I’m not tutoring I am researching and writing down my ideas. It requires a lot of discipline and dedication, but I feel most inspired when I’m not tethered to my desk. Ideas for stories have come to me in the strangest of places - scuba-diving in Malaysia, hiking through the Georgian mountains, or cycling through Tuscany. When I’m not travelling, I like to go to exhibitions, plays, and gigs - all the great things London has to offer.
