I see the responsibility of a tutor as not only helping my students with their immediate needs, but providing inspiration, mentoring and careers advice where required.
I have tutored for the past twenty years, having started during my PhD. I tutor science from Key Stage 3 to GCSE, and maths from key stage 3 to A-level. I have experience with students of a range of ability levels, and a full range of attitudes too!
I have extensive online tuition experience, working with students in many different countries around the world. I have also home-schooled students who have been unable to attend school for various reasons.
I have worked with students with the following special educational needs: autism spectrum, ADHD, epilepsy, dyslexia, dyspraxia, deafness and working memory difficulties, as well as students experiencing anxiety, depression and other mental health difficulties.
I completed my first degree in Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, and then moved to London where I completed a PhD in Neuroscience at UCL.
I have since worked as a scientist in a range of settings, including the House of Lords and the UK civil service. I am now a full time tutor.
I see the responsibility of a tutor as not only helping my students with their immediate needs, but providing inspiration, mentoring and careers advice where required.
First and foremost, I aim to help each student to 'think like a scientist', in understanding how to interpret information and evidence- a vital skill in the everyday world as well as in the academic one.
When helping a student prepare for exams, I work closely with the syllabus, and ensure that we cover all areas needed over whatever time we have available. I discuss each topic with the pupil, using a series of structured questions to build a genuine understanding, before moving on to the recall of the key facts required by the syllabus, and then finally working on exam technique.
I only set homework where the student and parent feel this would be helpful, and this will depend on the workload already set by the school. Where possible I encourage my students to mark their own work and learn from their mistakes, with the aim of developing their own sense of ownership over their academic progress.
I am currently spending my spare time planning an extensive upgrade to the energy-efficiency of my house - I am a qualified Passivhaus consultant.
Outside work I love hiking, running, Argentine tango, and getting creative in the kitchen!
