Over the past seven years, I have completed approximately 2,500 hours of teaching with students aged 5-18, with around 1,500 focused specifically on private tutoring. I teach the general curriculum, plus German and Italian up to 13+, and Maths, English and French up to GCSE and Spanish up to A Level. I also have experience teaching revision technique and interview practice for school entry assessments. My tutoring work has always been both online and in person, and has given me a strong understanding of how to balance academic rigour with fun and engagement for my students, whatever their age.
As well as tutoring, I spent five months working as a junior school teaching assistant (ages 4-11), primarily supporting literacy and numeracy development. I often used my language skills communicate with the younger ones in their native tongues if they had not yet been exposed to the English language. Following this job, I travelled around Tanzania, Zanzibar and Kenya, teaching English and maths in junior schools as a volunteer. This incredible experience allowed me to learn about new cultures and how to adapt my teaching style accordingly to create trusting, nurturing relationships with the students. One such school was students with physical and mental disabilities; working there was an emotional and eye-opening experience, and gave me a newfound appreciation for the value and versatility of education.
My best teaching experience has been working with a student over a two-year period (ages 9-11) preparing for her 11+ entry exam to Canford School. With two hour-long sessions each week, we worked on preparing her for her interviews, as well as her tests in English, maths, non-verbal and verbal reasoning. This academic journey was initially hindered by the student being tested for processing issues. However, after focusing on pastoral, confidence-based mentoring, I realised that she did not in fact have clinical learning difficulties, but rather a lack of self-confidence that inhibited her learning. I adjusted the format of our lessons accordingly. We openly discussed her mental block and the potential reasons behind it, and gradually managed to transform her approach to learning. This was topped off by her successfully getting in to Canford in March this year, which I was over the moon about.
One of my current students is a 5-year-old girl who is being homeschooled. I go to her home in Mayfair for four hours a week to teach her maths, Spanish, guitar and singing. This has been a particularly eye-opening job, and has piqued my interest in language acquisition from a young age.
