Haydn
Haydn is a Cambridge-educated scientist with a PhD in Chemistry and over ten years of experience teaching Maths, Physics and Chemistry. He has supported students internationally and now works in energy and climate policy alongside private tutoring.
My teaching style is generally student-led, with the aim of first understanding where the student currently is in terms of their grasp of the material, their ability to connect topics, and their approach to exam questions.
- GCSE Chemistry, Maths & Physics
- A Level Chemistry, Maths & Physics
- IB Chemistry, Maths & Physics
I have more than 10 years experience in teaching Chemistry, Maths and Physics to students of a range of abilities, age groups (12-18 years) and exam systems (IB, A-levels, GCSE, etc.) in the UK, Europe and the Middle East. Having begun teaching immediately after completing sixth form, I have helped guide hundreds of students in a range of formats (e.g. intensive revision courses, long-term one-to-one online tutoring, etc.).
During my PhD, I also worked as an academic supervisor for undergraduate Chemistry students at the University of Cambridge. In this role, I served as the primary academic contact for student groups, marking weekly problem sheets, delivering workshops and tutorials, and helping prepare students for examinations. This experience, alongside my role as an invigilator of Cambridge University interviews during my PhD studies, has also enabled me to offer students mentoring through the university selection, personal statement writing and interview support for science students applying to Oxbridge and other top UK universities.
Alongside my academic work, I helped develop an online learning platform called IB Better, where I served as Head of Chemistry. In this role, I designed, recorded and edited concise revision videos covering the International Baccalaureate Chemistry syllabus. At its peak, the platform had over 3,000 subscribers and more than 30,000 monthly site visits.
I am a Cambridge-educated scientist with a PhD in Chemistry and over ten years of experience teaching and tutoring Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
After completing the International Baccalaureate in my hometown of Brighton, I studied Natural Sciences (Physical) at the University of Cambridge from 2014–2018 before completing a PhD in Chemistry and Materials Science. Alongside my studies, I taught extensively, delivering revision courses and tutoring students across the UK, Europe and the Middle East with a number of tutoring companies, as well as supervising undergraduate chemistry students at the University of Cambridge.
During my PhD, I also worked with the online learning platform IB Better as Head of Chemistry, producing revision content and supporting IB students online. Since completing my PhD, I have worked as a researcher and consultant in energy and climate policy, while continuing to tutor students privately and through referrals.
My teaching style is generally student-led, with the aim of first understanding where the student currently is in terms of their grasp of the material, their ability to connect topics, and their approach to exam questions. As such, I try and make all lessons more of a conversation than a lecture, delivering prompts aimed at engaging the student to develop their own understanding of the topic, whilst allowing me to diagnose where knowledge gaps exist.
From there, I focus on addressing any gaps in core knowledge across the syllabus before building students’ confidence in applying the correct concepts and structuring answers in the way expected in their specific examination system.
As final exams approach, my focus shifts towards more practical aspects of exam preparation, including timing, identifying common question types, and maximising marks on challenging problems. Above all, I aim to create a relaxed and supportive learning environment, tailoring my approach to the individual needs of each student.
My approach to homework is generally tailored to each individual student's circumstances and general workload.
Since completing my PhD, I have been working in a role that has proven to be incredibly flexible, allowing me to teach during normal office hours and to work from a variety of locations both locally and internationally. Over the past two years, this flexibility has allowed me to steadily build my tutoring practice alongside my other work, giving me the confidence to make tutoring a more consistent and structured part of my daily routine going forward. I plan to be in this job for the foreseeable future and, if I were to change, would envisage looking for something similarly flexible.
Outside of tutoring, I can often be found on a football pitch, a basketball court, or running, cycling, or swimming aimlessly through one of London’s many green spaces. I'm a big film lover and generally go to the cinema at least once a week. Whenever time permits, I try to get out of London (or the UK, if possible) to hike/camp somewhere remote and mountainous. I also play drums and sing in a couple of offensively inoffensive indie bands.
