Julien
Julien is a seasoned Chemistry tutor with a strong academic background. He has supported students at a variety of levels and appreciates that every learner approaches the subject differently. Alongside his tutoring, Julien works as a research consultant.
Having taught chemistry to young adults for over 15 years, I have learned that every student approaches the subject differently.

My teaching career began during my PhD at Nantes University, where I received a 10-day training course on how to understand and teach fresh-out-of-secondary students, which I later applied to tutorials and laboratory sessions in general chemistry, thermodynamics, and kinetics for undergraduate students. This early experience taught me the importance of breaking down complex concepts into digestible steps - a skill that has proven invaluable throughout my career.
From 2014 to 2019, I worked at the University of Cambridge, where I delivered small-group supervisions (the Cambridge tutorial model) in inorganic chemistry and electrochemistry. These intimate teaching sessions - typically 2-3 students at a time - required me to diagnose individual misconceptions quickly and adapt my explanations on the spot. I became adept at identifying where students were struggling and tailoring my approach to help them grasp difficult topics like redox reactions, equilibrium, and molecular structure - all core components of GCSE and A-level Chemistry.
In Germany (2019-2024), I supervised over 500 undergraduates and 100+ postgraduates, delivering lectures and tutorials across general chemistry, organic and inorganic chemistry, thermodynamics, and electrochemistry. I was awarded the Supervisory Award in 2021 for outstanding student mentoring. Many of the topics I taught - atomic structure, bonding, reaction mechanisms, energetics - directly align with UK exam board syllabi (AQA, Edexcel, OCR), and I have familiarised myself thoroughly with GCSE, IGCSE, A-level, and IB Chemistry specifications.
Overall, I have extensive one-to-one mentoring experience with students at varying levels of confidence and ability. Several of my former students have gone on to successful careers in chemistry research and industry. I am passionate about applying this experience across all levels of chemistry education, from GCSE and A-level students building their core understanding, to undergraduates tackling more advanced topics. My goal is always the same: helping students develop strong foundations and genuine comprehension that will serve them well beyond exams.
I was born and raised in France, where I developed an early passion for chemistry. After completing my Master's degree and PhD in Chemistry at Nantes Université with the highest evaluation of 'Exceptional', I moved to the UK in 2014 to join the University of Cambridge as a research associate and supervisor. I spent five years there as a research associate and supervisor, teaching small-group tutorials in inorganic chemistry and electrochemistry, becoming deeply familiar with the UK academic system. In 2019, I moved to Munich (Germany) to lead my own research group at the Technical University of Munich, where I lectured and supervised students for five years, earning a Supervisory Award in 2021 for outstanding mentoring.
I returned to the UK in late 2024 and am now based in London, where I work as a research advisor whilst tutoring chemistry to help students build genuine understanding and confidence in the subject.
Having taught chemistry to young adults for over 15 years, I have learned that every student approaches the subject differently. Some think visually, others need to work through problems systematically, and many benefit from connecting abstract concepts to real-world applications.
I always take time to understand each student first before adapting my approach. Where they are, what do they understand, how do they feel about the topic, what do they want. I consider myself patient and encouraging, believing that confidence is as important as knowledge when it comes to exam success. My goal is not just to help students pass their exams, but to help them genuinely understand chemistry in a way that makes sense to them - whether that is through structured problem-solving, visual diagrams, or exploring why certain reactions happen the way they do.
I am particularly passionate about helping students move from memorisation to true comprehension.
I am currently serving as a Research Consultant, a role I began in January 2025. In this capacity, I provide strategic guidance on chemistry and materials for clean energy research projects and continue to contribute to the scientific community through publications and collaborations.
When I am not tutoring, I enjoy traveling the world, reading, and hiking.
