Biography
I am a Cambridge University Natural Sciences' graduate. The Natural Sciences tripos allowed me to study Maths, Physics and Chemistry to undergraduate level, and in my last year I specialised in The History and Philosophy of Science.
After Cambridge I had a complete change of direction and decided that I wanted to study acting and pursue it as a career. I applied to The Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted onto a postgradute acting course which ended in 2007.
Personal Approach
The way I approach tutoring obviously depends to a large extent on the student and how I think they will learn best.
My initial aim is usually to locate the problem areas and then work from there by firstly explaining and talking out the topics with the student, helping them to take notes, and then using lots of practice questions to make sure everything is fully absorbed. If a student is having difficulty with fact learning I often use word and picture associations to help them remember.
I am always patient and easygoing but at the same time I encourage my students to challenge themselves in order to help them achieve their full potential. I also work hard to improve their confidence as I know when there is little it can hold a child back from wanting to learn.

''Amanda Fernando-Stevens has been tutoring both my children for the past four months. Sophie (14), who is currently starting on her GCSE courses, has always found chemistry to be a struggle but since she has started weekly lessons with Amanda, she has grown in confidence and her marks have improved significantly. Indeed, at a recent parent teacher meeting, her chemistry teacher said that she seemed to be ‘a different child’.
Alexander (12), who will be sitting common entrance for Westminster in June, has always struggled with maths. As it’s a subject that Westminster regards as essential, Amanda’s help and support has been invaluable. In his latest set of exams, he came third in his class with 81%.
Despite the fact that Amanda’s lessons take place at the weekend, neither child has ever complained about giving up their free time – highly unusual in our household. She is very pleasant, unfailingly polite, conscientious and reliable. She also seems to have a real knack in dealing with children which is important as both of mine are quite badly affected by dyspraxia and they have issues with concentration and organisation.
I would not hesitate to recommend her as a tutor.''
''Thanks Will, we were very pleased with Amanda, i felt she gets Maya to concentrate much better than i can , and looking forward to her next visit.''
'I GOT AN A* IN CHEMISTRY AND 95 UMS MARKS
YAAAAAAYYY :)
...thankyou amanda xxx'
'Hi it's Flora, just thought you might like to know that I got an A* in my science, so many thanks for your help!'
''I have known Amanda Fernando-Stevens since May 2010, when she began tutoring my daughter Stephanie in Maths, Chemistry, and Physics. Stephanie was in Year 10 at the time and preparing for her first GCSE modules in Chemistry and Physics... Yet Stephanie found it very easy to relate to Amanda, under whose tutelage she progressed rapidly. Amanda has an easy, open, and sympathetic manner. That she is a Cambridge graduate pursuing a career as an actress only enhanced her appeal to my daughter, whose own preoccupations are drama, music, and song-writing and whose teachers at school tend not to be terribly inspiring role models. Stephanie enjoyed working one-to-one with Amanda, who would listen patiently to Stephanie’s delineations of the issues she was having problems with and then adroitly guide her toward a fuller understanding. Amanda clearly is a knowledgeable and natural teacher. Stephanie’s results on her GCSE modules were excellent...
I most highly recommend Amanda as a tutor.''
''Amanda taught Maths, Physics and Chemistry to our daughter Meghan when Meghan was in Year 11, studying for her GCSEs. At the time, Meghan was feeling unconfident about sciences and maths. We had tried speaking to her teachers and had employed a tutor for maths and physics. Neither strategy helped her confidence or her grades until we employed Amanda to tutor Meghan in all theee subjects.
Amanda’s patience, warmth, kindness and intelligent teaching allowed Meghan to blossom and realise that the subjects weren’t so scary after all. She achieved A* in her GCSE grades for all three subjects and went on to study ‘A’ level Maths. We had to call in Amanda again last year to help Meghan with the Mechanics module in her AS Maths course. Once again, Amanda’s teaching enabled Meghan to thrive. She achieved an A grade at AS level and is continuing on her Maths course at A2 level with no need for further help.''
