Biography
I graduated in July '11 from a one year post-grad in contemporary dance at Trinity Laban, after graduating from Cambridge, reading music, in June '10. A classically-trained musician (especially singing, piano and composition), I sang with King's College Choir for 8 years as a chorister and choral scholar, inbetween holding a top music scholarship at Eton College. I work now as a freelance singer and maths tutor.
Initially I came to tutoring because of the potential for it to fit around my studies, but I regard it now as a permanent aspect of my freelance career. In addition to my freelance work I'm also a full-time maths teacher at Westminster Cathedral Choir School. I really enjoy teaching, and I find it most satisfying to be able to give students the best chance of maximising their potential in their studies.
Personal Approach
Everybody learns differently, so a good teacher should be able to find as many ways of communicating information as necessary for a student to understand. But communication is a two-way game, so it's also important for a teacher to encourage a student to demonstrate understanding, either by explaining something in their own words or by solving problems/answering questions. Requiring a student to articulate themselves (be it in asking or answering questions) not only consolidates learning and improves retention and recall, but also builds self-confidence (another essential part of learning).
What I do when I am not tutoring
To date my other job (as a singer) has taken me to five continents; I've done many concerts, radio and TV broadcasts (and one to cinemas worldwide) and recordings. There's rarely a dull moment! But while keeping myself busy is the name of the game most of the time, I do enjoy a spot of cooking or baking now and again...

''James has been an excellent tutor. He is timely, flexible, knowledgeable and has a calming, patient manner with the children. He has helped my daughter enhance her comprehension and skill in math as well increased her confidence in her ability to perform a higher level of maths. In addition, he is very pleasant to have around and is not phased by the inevitable disruptions caused by younger siblings.
I would highly recommend James as a tutor!''
Lisa H.
''I recommended you highly - anyone who can get jack over 90 percent in maths (yes, apparently he got over 90 percent!)..against all odds..is pretty miraculous.''
Yasmin P.
