11+ Experience, 13+ Experience, GSCE (Maths/English), AS and A2 English, Eton Pre-test, Interview Practice, Essay Planning, & Revision Planning.
I have been tutoring for 7 years now and have a great deal of experience in tutoring a diversity of students. Recently one of my GCSE students retook his GCSE Literature (which he got a C in) and after just a few months of tuition he managed to attain an A. Last year another of my students attained full marks in one of her A-level modules.
I have worked with all the boards for both GCSE and A-level and I have worked on entrance exams to most of the top schools. A recent success story includes working for three months with a Russian boy on his 16+ to Felsted who, despite an initial large language barrier, managed to secure a place and was complemented on his the strength of his interview.
I also have experience working residentially both nationally and internationally and tutoring groups as well as individuals.

- Graduate of Trinity College Dublin with a First in English Literature 2005-2009
- Minor in Theatre Studies from UC Berkeley (GPA 3.94) 2007-2008 (Scholarship to Study Abroad)
- Worked as a tutor since October 2009 and regularly facilitate workshops in schools of children aged 6 - 18.
- Volunteer for Great Men (working with young boys to disrupt gender stereotypes in schools) & Ministry of Stories (helping, often disadvantaged, young people to engage with creative writing)
I believe in helping students find their own words to explain any problem areas. In this way I think my biggest asset is my approachability. I believe a tutor's job is to bridge a gap between the school and the student so I have a found a friendly but structured approach works best.
I think it's imperative that the student is able to identify his or her own weaknesses in order to find comprehensive ways to make sense of them. The effects are of course much longer lasting than merely having a teacher/tutor explain it to them. I always work with my students to create a book of notes that make sense to them from which they can revise and refer back to.
I am especially thorough on structure - whether that be for essay planning or structuring comprehension answers. I have my own tried and tested essay plan method which I teach to all my students to give their essays focus and direction. It teaches a process of distillation and getting to the core of what the question is really asking. I also spend a lot of time with my students on close textual analysis so that they can really dissect quotations to their fullest potential.
Growing up with dyspraxia, I have always been very aware of the variety of ways in which a student can engage with English Language and Literature. I am very fond of working with students with learning difficulties to help them find innovative ways to get to grips with texts, tackle essays, creative writing and comprehension.
Although I read English Literature for my degree I took Maths at A-level and very much enjoy teaching it, especially for 11+ and 13+. I think as someone who has an arts background as opposed to a maths/science one, I work particularly well with students who struggle with Maths as we find creative ways to problem solving.
What I do when I am not tutoring

I thought Tom was very good at dealing with an 11 year old and was able to reassure him when there was a question my son didn't know how to answer (Mother of student focused on St Paul's Boys)
“My daughter is very happy with Tom Williams” (Katrina, mother of A-level student, English)
27/11/2015: ''Tom has changed my daughter's approach to English as a subject, although she has always enjoyed it you have widened her horizons on how to engage with literature.'' (Joana, mother of student who successfully gained a place at Highgate for 16+)
20/01/2015: ''We cannot recommend Tom highly enough. We have known him for some four years now. He helped my son attain an A grade with his English GCSE, and now continues to point him in the right direction with A-Level English Language/Literature.'' (Kim, mother of GCSE / A-level Student)
14/12/2014: ''Tom takes his tutoring seriously. He is patient in his explanations, but quite rightly expects any work that he has set to be done by the time of the next session.'' (Mother of A-level Student)
