I am a Durham University Ph.D. graduate who has been tutoring, coaching and mentoring students since starting a Postgraduate in 2008. Initially, this was achieved through the Teaching and Support Learning programs offered by the University and has since turned into a full-time profession and passion of mine. At Durham, my teaching roles included working with undergraduates on several aspects of their academic work and also preparing and marking work.
Post-University, I started tutoring full-time in Shropshire, where I mentored students from several of the top local private schools, including Shrewsbury high/prep school and Rugby. Eventually, I was teaching a range of subjects which included Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Geography at GCSE-level and Biology, Chemistry, Geography, and Geology at A-level. My blend of science tuition and academic coaching has recently helped two of my students achieve 100% in their examinations, one of whom also gained a scholarship to study at Shrewsbury School.
I now work with students primarily in London and the South East, particularly those who are looking to get top results in their science GCSE's and are preparing for Russell Group university admissions. However, my role as a tutor is not restricted to those only seeking to get into top universities; it is to help students at all levels reach their academic potential.
Having initially left education at 18 with A-Levels in the Arts, I spent the next four years working and travelling, during which time I developed a fascination for geology, and in particular, volcanoes. So, in 2003, I enrolled on to the Science Foundation Program at the University of Leicester where I gained top grades in A-Level Chemistry, Maths and Physics during one intensive year (before university admission for a science degree).
I spent the next four years studying for a Master’s degree in Geology, from which I graduated top of my year with first-class honours. I was also the recipient of several top academic prizes including the British Micromount Society Prize (for my contribution in petrology and mineralogy) and the Geology Alumni Society Prize (for academic excellence).
In 2008, I was awarded a fully-funded Ph.D. scholarship at Durham University to study the geochemistry of volcanic rocks from the Sunda Arc, Indonesia, which included several months of fieldwork and rock sampling on some of the World’s most active volcanoes. It was during this time as a postgraduate that I developed a passion for teaching and tutoring. I graduated with my doctorate in 2013 and went on to tutor professionally in 2014.
My aim is always to support and maximise the development of a student's potential in their education. I believe that learning should be an enjoyable and rewarding process and I work with students on several aspects of their learning development; from specific subject comprehension to examination strategies and learning techniques.
I am also trained in performance coaching and work with many students to progressively increase their confidence, motivation, time-management, and independent thinking skills in all areas of education. Specifically, I combine personal development with a real passion for science and depth of knowledge across a range of subjects.
What I do when I am not tutoring
When not tutoring, I love to travel and enjoy anything active such as sports, and country walking. I love visiting new places, particularly areas of natural beauty and those by the coast. I am also an avid reader and love to learn. Some of the topics I am currently learning about include coaching, personal development, philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and many autobiographies. A few recent examples include; The Happiness Hypothesis – by Jonathan Haidt, The Art of Learning – by Josh Waitzkin and Elon Musk – by Ashlee Vance. Every year I also attend several conferences and mastermind groups to learn from people who inspire and motivate me.

Lessons with Scott
Scott has been helping me with my GCSE further Science. With his tutoring, my understanding in Science and the marks I received in my mock exams have improved a lot. He also introduced me to lots of new techniques for learning and revision and gives me good advice when I get stuck somewhere in my work. He is friendly and supportive and always thinks positively.
My knowledge in Science and resolving math problems improved a lot thanks to Scott.

A tutor who is driven to help his students succeed.
Scott’s passion for helping others to learn and achieve results beyond their personal expectations is inspirational. His ability to teach subject content combined with his knowledge of techniques that enhance learning means that he provides his students with skills and confidence that can be used throughout their education. This is what makes Scott such an exceptional tutor.
Scott helped me to understand subject areas that I struggled with. He also helped me find the best learning and revision techniques that work best for me. This has helped me significantly in my exam preparation.
Subject: IGCSE Chemistry (Edexcel)
I booked Scott prior to my daughter’s mock exams. As it happens, she did really well. My daughter found Scott to be very comprehensive. He gave her good tips for exam technique and was very clear and thorough. I would not hesitate to use him again if required or to recommend him to others.
Subject: IGCSE Chemistry/Physics (Edexcel)
I found Scott to be really deeply interested and passionate in the Science subjects he was teaching my daughter, but most of all he was very committed! My daughter said he explained concepts and showed techniques really well and effectively that she could apply to all her subjects. He has boosted the confidence further in my daughter to do her best in Science and develop some solid strategies for learning effectively. I would highly recommend Scott as my daughter stated she would only be willing to learn from him. We are so pleased to have found Scott!
Achieved 100% (53/53) in Chemistry exam. Finishing top of her Private School (St. Albans) year.
Subject: IGCSE Geography/Physics (Edexcel)
Scott has been an amazing tutor for my home educated daughter; his enthusiasm and knowledge has brought the subject (which had previously been the least favourite) to life.
Scott’s ability to broaden our and apply the content to other areas has been helpful in teaching my daughter how to apply what she has learnt. Scott’s teaching style was adapted specifically to meet my daughter’s needs and this approach had helped her achieve her highest grades so far.
Scott is highly organised and prepares thoroughly for each lesson and provides ample worksheets for later reference.
I would highly recommend Scott as a Tutor as he has inspired my daughter to work hard and achieve her potential, as a consequence she has achieved 100% on her assignments since work with him.

Helpful, friendly and a superstar.
We left it late to finding a tutor, so was amazed that someone with the communication skills, ability and personality was prepared to have a meeting with us prior to any agreement being made.
Soon became clear that Scott was a gem.
He offered his phone number and email address for help outside of the tutor sessions.
Our only regret was that we hadn't found Scott sooner.
In the short time that he spent with us, our daughter's confidence grew, she found school lessons easier and believes that he has helped improve the GCSE grade.
His methods also helped with revision of her other subjects.
Thank you, Scott.
Subject: GCSE Maths and Science
Excellent tutor, highly recommended.
Scott has tutored my son Alex (year 11) this year in maths, chemistry and physics in the lead up to his GSCE exams. Alex has a keen interest in these subjects and plans to take them at A level, however, felt he was weak in some areas following his mock exams. Alex quickly became more confident in these subjects and was able to tailor the lesson plan with Scott for each session to ensure the focus was on the areas he was struggling with. Although we don't yet have the exam results, I'm sure the results will be significantly better following these focused tutoring sessions! It will also give Alex the confidence to move on to A level with a much deeper understanding of these subjects than he would have had through his normal school lessons. Scott is approachable and friendly and immediately put Alex at ease; we had no complaints about the extra hours of school work taking place in the evenings as Alex actually looked forward to the sessions with Scott!
Outcome: Achieved an A-grades in maths and triple science

Reference for Dr Scott Dempsey: A level Chemistry tuition.
My 16-year-old son rated Scott highly as a personal tutor. Scott explained difficult concepts in a way that best suited his learning style and at a pace at which he could process what was being said. Scott always prepared for each session, having agreed content with my son in advance.

Very patient and inspiring tutor.
Scott has been tutoring my daughter through the summer and we will continue through year 11 for her maths GCSE. Already she is feeling more confident and positive about maths. Scott is very friendly and has a calm, patient manner. He really understands how everyone has different learning styles and consequently he uses different methods and techniques to teach and explain the syllabus. My daughter really enjoys his sessions and she is amazed how quickly she is grasping maths concepts that she had previously struggled with. We are so delighted with Scott's teaching and would fully recommend him.

Pick of the Crop
Scott is simply the best and as a mum of two I have met a few tutors in my time!
His commitment to his students is clear from day one. He was genuinely interested in my son and wanted to understand his needs so they could get the best from the sessions. He is a great listener and a natural coach who believes in his students' potential. My son was preparing for GCSE Double Science and felt there were some crucial gaps in his knowledge and understanding. He has dyslexia with a statement of special needs. He grew in confidence and genuine interest in the 3 sciences week on week as Scott brought his own passion for these subjects to the tutorials.
Outcome: Scott consistently turned up on time, was organised and focused, and went the extra mile. He proved to be an excellent role model and when my son opened his envelope on results day, after contacting family, it was Scott he called first to share the great news - A’s !
Subject: IGCSE Geography
Scott tutored my 16 yr old daughter through the final year of her Geography IGCSE and turned a subject, that had been a '' chore'' in her eyes, into something she actively enjoyed and then went on to gain an A* in the exam.
I cannot recommend Scott highly enough as a tutor. I feel his approach, which encourages the student to find their own learning style, supports them through all their studies. This coaching made a huge difference to my daughter's ability to plan and manage the rest of her workload.
Outcome: My daughter gained an A* in her Geography IGCSE and is actively using the study skills she learnt with Scott at A level.
Subject: GCSE Maths (Edexcel)
More than just a tutor.
Scott has been outstanding as a tutor and coach to our son. By building his knowledge and confidence, Scott has enabled our son to make rapid improvements in his grades and he now enjoys a subject he previously disliked. This holistic approach is exactly what was required.
Outcome: Improved grades, enthusiasm for the subject and a certificate of achievement from his class teacher.
Subjects: A-level Biology and GCSE Sciences
Scott tutored me though out my GCSE, in all three science and now just tutors me for A-level Biology. I am severely dyslexic and have a statement. Scott was able to take my weakness and put them to one side and really enhance my strengths. He did this through alternative learning techniques and persistence. We was a huge motivator during my GCSE and is now a great support during my A levels.
I look forward to my lessons with Scott. He always has something up his sleeve and is prepared for every lesson. His knowledge is outstanding and his personality is great.
Outcome: A's in Physics and Chemistry. A and A* in Biology. One of four highest achievers in the science department at my school. Meaning I was predicted C's in all of my science's.
