I graduated from Trinity College, Dublin with a Masters in English Literature in 2005. Following my Literature Studies I successfully auditioned with the ‘Royal Welsh college of Music and Drama’. I spent the next three years tutoring English Literature, and mentoring in schools. I have worked with a range of students on a one to one basis, providing assistance with exam revision, exam preparation, coursework support, classes on the study of Literature, essay writing technique and interview technique.
I have a further four years experience within education as a Learning Mentor in Secondary and Private Schools with Protocol Education which provided me with experience of general current syllabuses as well as essential insights into a wide range of learning techniques used within many institutional structures. It has also provided me with the expertise necessary for working with pupils with learning difficulties.
In 2009 I undertook yet another MA in Arts Psychotherapy at the ‘Institute of Arts in Therapy and Education’ (4 years). This provided me with a specialist psychological and developmental understanding to education.
I now tutor English Literature at AS/A-level, direct and run Creative Writing and Arts workshops, as well as working as an Arts Therapist. I currently work as an English Literature Specialist with Talented and Engaged Tuition.
I aim to bring inspiration, flexibility and rigour to tuition sessions, whilst focussing everything around the individual. Fostering a positive relationship means the tutee should feel comfortable to bring up questions and I aim to address and solve these together. Tailoring a tuition session appropriately to each student, I use the early stages to develop the best plan to proceed.
I provide a breadth of English Language and Literature knowledge and always aim to expand a tutee’s education. Also, by introducing study skills, giving regular reading and writing practice, alongside continued detailed feedback and encouragement, I aim to greatly improve a tutee’s ability.
With creativity and insight, I have been able to appeal to the interests and enthusiasms of my tutees. I also believe in providing a structured framework from which to meet and match the demands of English and English literature examinations within the wider educational system. I aim to foster confidence, encourage my pupils to enjoy their studies; while also to be rigorous, helping them to develop good learning habits and thus to ensure that they achieve their full potential.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I currently live in London and when I am not tutoring English Literature, working as an Arts Psychotherapist, or running Creative Writing and Arts workshops, I am usually spending my time cultivating and developing my own writing and art practice whilst enjoying going to as many dance classes as possible!

MENTORING IN SCHOOLS
'I would like to pay tribute to Helen for the excellent work she does in my Year 8 English class. She has produced some outstanding resources for me (high-quality differentiated worksheets) and is truly an asset in the classroom environment... I think she is a tremendous asset to the school and I want you to know how much I value her contributions and I look forward to utilising her talents in the future. She is the example of how I envisage classroom and pupil support.'
