I have been tutoring Mathematics to ages 6 to 18 years olds since 2005.
I have been teaching IB since 2010 and have been recently appointed as an examiner for IB Mathematics and have taught the subject at all three levels (Higher, Standard and Studies). I specialise in teaching the statistics option at Higher Level.
I have experience of tutoring 11+ and teaching KS3, GCSE and A-level Mathematics. I teach all core A-level units, all statistics options as well as M1 and D1.
I am also an experienced IB Extended Essay supervisor and have tutored both A-level and IB Economics as well as all GCSE Sciences.
I grew up in rural Shropshire where both of my parents and my sister worked as secondary school teachers. Having completed A-levels in Mathematics, Economics, Physics and General Studies with AACA, I went on to study Economics and Econometrics at the University of Manchester where I obtained a 2:1.
Whilst always keen to follow in the family tradition, I first decided to get some commercial experience and joined PricewaterhouseCoopers upon leaving university. I then worked for Accenture before making the move into education.
I completed my PGCE in 2007 since which time I've taught Mathematics from Key Stage 3 to A-level in a number of ‘Outstanding’ schools. I began teaching International Baccalaureate (IB) Mathematics in 2010 and gained a leadership role as IB Coordinator in 2012.
I am an experienced teacher and take pride in my ability to form excellent working relationships with all those that I teach and tutor. I am able to quickly identify a student’s current level, learning style and and potential barriers to success and then design a personalised programme of learning accordingly.
I believe there is no substitute for written practice in Mathematics though my my main focus is to promote a deep level of understanding. I have a strong interest in educational technologies and incorporate their use where appropriate so as to maximise the acceleration of progress.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I teach, practice yoga and play cricket. Whilst I attended the Aston Villa Academy and played cricket for Staffordshire at junior level, the standard I am able to play these days is some distance below the where it once was. Now I gain significantly more pleasure (and less discomfort) from spectating.
“The transition into post GCSE maths was a big shock, but with the guidance of Mr Hargreaves we have all been able to successfully obtain our target grades (most of us have gone beyond).'' Paul - A former student
''There was a point at which I thought I was not going to be able to cope, but Mr Hargreaves positivity and encouragement made it worthwhile.” Joseph - A former student
“His approach to the mocks was something that he will always be remembered for, instead of grilling us on bad results he managed to look at both the positives and the negatives with a good attitude, showing us all was not lost. His belief in his students created an atmosphere that was right for IB maths ... Thank you Mr Hargreaves for the dedication and belief in our class, we couldn’t have done it without you.” - A former IB maths class
