My experience in one-to-one tutoring is extensive, acquired over the past 3 years with Keystone and other elite tutoring companies. I specialise in 11+ and 13+ preparation and support, having success with entry to top schools including Eton, Westminster, St. Pauls, Wycombe Abbey, Godolphin and Latymer, Alleyns, amongst many others.
I also specialise in English at GCSE and A-Level, with particular expertise in poetry and literature.
I have a wealth of homeschool and residential tutoring experience, including tutoring in Argentina, Verbier, and Italy, which has provided me with a fantastic insight into how important the personal tutor-student relationship is to the success of tutoring: My approach is personal, and taking the student seriously as an individual, rather than necessarily just having them jump through hoops to pass exams.
I would say that the greatest part of the job lies in the moments of genuine inspiration you see when an obstacle is overcome, or something just 'clicks' for one of my students: To see somebody who previously felt at odds with a subject subsequently be passionate about it and thinking outside the box, is a wonderful thing.
I took A-Levels in English Literature (A), Geography (A), and Physics (A) , and then in 2002 went on to St. Catherine's College, Oxford, where I gained a 2.1 in English Literature and Language. From 2007-2009 I trained as an actor at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). Working as an actor and a tutor, I have considerable tutoring experience gathered from the last 3 years.
My approach is grounded in that for the most part, a student's interest and 'personal relationship' with a subject is extremely important, as this is what focuses and drives them. I therefore seek to inspire this interest in them by first viewing the subject from outside a rigid academic sphere.
I will then take the student thoroughly through past papers and questions, and very importantly look carefully at the examiners' mark schemes and comments from previous years. Then we can focus on how to tailor their mind and abilities to this, to achieve the best results possible.
What I do when I am not tutoring
When I'm not tutoring I work as a professional actor. I'm always hugely organised to ensure that there is no interference with my work as a tutor, as it's important to me to have longevity with my families and students.
When i'm not working, I enjoy surfing in Devon all year round (even winter!), basketball, climbing, and skiing.
I currently live in Wandsworth, in southwest London.
"My son liked Kane hugely -we all did and do. He was brilliant at boosting my son’s confidence which was a real problem as it was distinctly lacking when he first met Kane.Kane is an exceptional tutor, very clever and knowledgeable, extremely clear and very good at explanation. He is also an exceptionally lovely person. I can’t recommend him highly enough." (Mother of 11+ Student)
Kane had a good first session with Joe and all went really well. He seems to get on well with Joe. (Mother of 13+ student)
"My daughter really enjoyed working with Kane, he seemed to make lessons amusing. He discussed the work with me and followed my directions well. He was very easy to live with, pitched in and was helpful." (Mother of 11+ student in Paris)
“The first session with Kane went brilliantly. My son really hit it off with him immediately and we are very keen to proceed with a weekly session.” (Julia, mother of 13+ boy, English)
