Having worked as a qualified science teacher for several years in a large outstanding secondary school I have extensive experience of public examinations and working with many children of varying ages and abilities.
I went to school in Oxfordshire and completed my A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and English Literature before studying Zoology at Leeds University. Educating young people is an exciting challenge and I began undertaking school experience programs when I was at university. This led me to complete a PGCE in Secondary Science which led to qualified teacher status. After working at an Outstanding secondary school as a science teacher for three years I completed an MSc in Education (child development) at the University of Oxford to further my understanding of how children learn. After gaining a high distinction in my dissertation I am now undertaking a DPhil at Oxford which has a focus on improving the conceptual understanding of children at primary school by designing and implementing an enquiry-based science programme.
Identifying areas of weakness is an essential starting point. Too often these areas develop due to a lack of confidence or gaps in subject knowledge. I aim to build up this confidence and fill in the gaps whilst forming a strong relationship with each student based on their own learning style.
After this has been achieved I believe a clear focus on exam content and technique will produce the best outcome. Familiarisation with exam papers and mark schemes will help students identify what they are being asked to do. Subsequently they will feel more relaxed when faced with the actual paper and ultimately achieve better.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I am currently completing a DPhil in Education at the University of Oxford so spend time reading and researching around my topic. During the summer I enjoy travelling, especially in Asia, and aim to see as much of the world as possible!
