I have extensive experience tutoring for the CE 11+ and 13+ maths and science exams, including home schooling for CE 13+ maths, biology, chemistry and physics. I have prepared students for 13+ exams to Charterhouse, Cheltenham, Marlborough, Radley, Sevenoaks and Tonbridge, and also for the Westminster and Eton scholarship exams.
I tutor for a variety of GCSE syllabuses (including IGCSEs), as well as home schooling in maths, biology, chemistry and physics at GCSE level. I give weekly lessons as well as short-term intensive pre-exam revision tutoring for maths, biology, chemistry and physics. I also tutor for 16+ exam preparation for schools such as Eton, Haileybury, Harrow, Sevenoaks, St Paul's, Tonbridge and Westminster.
In addition, I have experience of the US K12 home schooling program, an online education system used by an American family living in the UK, for whom I provided additional support (subjects included Middle School Pre-Algebra, Middle School Algebra, Advanced Life Science, Advanced Physical Science and English/Composition) and tutoring for grade 8 and 9 courses including Algebra I, Geometry with Proof and Biology.
I have previously volunteered with The Trust, a charity working in an inner city estate, where I was a tutor for primary-age children. Since 2006, I have gained considerable experience working with children with a wide range of special needs including autism and ADHD both in the UK and abroad. During the last three years of my university degree I was invited by my department to act as an Academic Mentor for prospective UCAS students, tutoring students on their interview days.
I also have extensive experience tutoring online for students in a range of countries including Dubai, Hong Kong, Italy, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland and the USA covering 11+, 13+, 16+ and GCSE maths, as well as 13+, 16+ and GCSE biology, chemistry and physics.
In terms of pre-tests, I recommend building up a thorough knowledge of the 11+ Maths syllabus and focusing as much as possible on mental arithmetic and word problems. I use a variety of activities to target the time pressured nature of the tests and develop strong problem solving skills.
I grew up in West Sussex and took part in many extra-curricular activities whilst studying for A levels in maths (A grade), physics (A grade) and English literature (A grade) at Bishop Luffa School. With other students from my sixth form, I was a member of a company called Atomos that won the Young Enterprise Sussex final competition and made a profit of over £2000. I was also a member of a Formula 1 in Schools team that designed a mini race car powered by a carbon dioxide canister and eventually placed 5th in the national finals.
During my gap year I spent four months in Thailand where I volunteered in the government homes for children with special needs. I very much enjoyed this experience, and during the university summer holidays I volunteered with children with special needs at the New Wine conferences.
Following my gap year I went on to study for an MEng in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London, where I gained a 2.1 degree. I have a competitive side and enjoyed playing roller hockey at university, where I was one of only two girls in the team! I also volunteer through my local church and have helped to run Alpha courses for students in London.
Having received tutoring myself during my A levels, I understand how to motivate students. Whilst at university I designed a course for engineering undergraduates on Natural Engineering, including the development of teaching methods specific to the subject, which subsequently underwent further development at Imperial College. This deepened my knowledge of different learning styles, which I have found extremely helpful as a tutor.
What I do when I am not tutoring
In 2014 I joined the congregation of a church in West London that had been closed for almost a decade and was reopened in partnership with an existing local church. I have been involved with helping to raise over £300,000 to fund the refurbishment of the building, hosting a midweek small group and setting up the church for events.
I have also been to Kenya to run training courses for local churches. This was a fantastic opportunity to do something challenging that took me outside of my comfort zone, and also gave me experience of delivering talks for around 70 delegates and thinking on my feet!
