I have a lot of experience teaching my main subjects, Maths, English and French, to 8-16 year olds. I provide regular help with the subjects during term time, as well as intensive revision sessions for exams, including 11+, 13+ and GCSE.
I also have experience working with children and teenagers overseas, from Canada to Israel/Palestine. I hold a TEFL/TESOL qualification, which has provided me with a range of teaching techniques, including teaching young learners, and one-to-one tuition. This has been invaluable in my tutoring so far.
I grew up in North Yorkshire, and after completing A levels in French, Maths, Further Maths and Psychology (all grade A), I took a gap year in Canada where I taught in a French school. I then spent four happy years in Edinburgh where I completed my degree in Arabic and Linguistics, and the next 18 months in the Middle East before returning and moving to London. I completed a Master's degree in Language Documentation and Description passing with a Distinction, at SOAS, University of London.
I later qualified as a cycling instructor, which is my current job aside from tutoring. I teach children and adults everything from how to get on a bike, how to ride on urban roads, and bicycle maintenance. It's great! I also work with a charity that aims to enable people with learning difficulties and physical disabilities to ride bikes.
I believe extra individual attention in the subjects I tutor is always beneficial. I love engaging with people and sharing my passion for learning. My approach is to work through a subject simply and methodically, to increase understanding and allow extra guided practice, while also encouraging the student to look as far as possible into aspects that spark their interest.
I try to find ways to engage each student's curiosity and to offer an intellectual challenge at the right level, tailoring my material to the individual's way of learning.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I love languages and travel. I am especially interested in the Middle East and have explored the region thoroughly. I am fascinated by languages, and have learnt Georgian and Sylheti, a dialect of Bengali, as well as my main languages, French and Arabic, and a little of many others - all this remains a mystery to my parents... I'm currently learning Welsh.
I also enjoy cycling, camping and the outdoors, music, photography, and love reading, theatre and film.

'We are absolutely delighted with Frances. She has been very good with our son. He has a short attention span and she has managed to get him to do an hour of French. It’s unheard of!
