- Mathematics for 11+, 13+ and 16+ entrance exams as well as for GCSE and A-level.
- English for 11+, 13+ and 16+ entrance exams as well as for GCSE level and A-level.
- Chemistry, physics and biology for 11+, 13+, 16+ entrance exams as well as for GCSE level.
- Philosophy at A-level and degree level, specialising in analytic philosophy and the philosophy of science. I also teach curious adult learners who aren’t studying for any particular exam.
I have successfully placed over 35 students into a wide range of schools including Bancroft, Benenden, Channing, Cheltenham Ladies College, City of London, Eton, Forest, Francis Holland, Godolphin and Latymer School, Haberdashers', Highgate, Harrow, North London Collegiate School, Queen's College, Sevenoaks, South Hampstead, St. Paul's, UCS, Westminster and Winchester.
I have worked as an assessor for a London tutoring agency since 2010. I conduct assessments which potential tutors must pass before they are allowed to work for the agency. Assessing other tutors has given me excellent insights as to how to improve my own teaching. As well as working with Keystone, I am a senior tutor at two other London-based agencies.
Although I am originally Dutch, I moved to Spain at an early age where I attended an English international school and took my GCSEs and A-levels. At 17 I moved the UK to read Philosophy of Science and went on to graduate at the top of my year in both my undergraduate and master’s degrees.
I began tutoring during my MSc at the London School of Economics. Subsequently I decided to pursue a career in science and began to train as a geologist at Birkbeck College, University of London, in a 4-year degree program while continuing to work as a tutor. Over the course of the last 3 years my tutoring career gained momentum and I made the decision to pause my second degree to focus on teaching.
The key to my approach is keeping the student’s mind as active as possible. My lessons are extremely questions-based and seek to guide a student to explore concepts rather than merely deposit information. Since this approach requires more engagement from the pupil, the material is better retained and more thoroughly understood.
I find the science of memory fascinating and have carefully researched and tested various memory techniques that I now find invaluable during my lessons. The luxury of one-to-one tuition is that each lesson can be perfectly tailored to the individual student. Over the first few sessions, I determine how the pupil best absorbs information and what teaching style they find the most engaging. The result is highly efficient learning which generally manages to be good fun as well.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I manage and write for a website which publishes articles and resources about education, focusing on the UK system.
''Many thanks for teaching me. Three schools accepted me: Uppingham, Rugby and Shrewsbury and I chose Rugby School.
I am so thrilled! I would not have achieved this if you hadn't taught me!
Again, thank you very much!'' - Year 11 Student
''Thank you so much for enabling me to be accepted to all 4 of the schools I have applied to. It truly is your excellent teaching that has made this possible for me!'' - Year 11 Student.
''Thank you for all your help and guidance to my daughter, the improvement in her maths has been remarkable and she was consistently scoring above 75-80% on CE papers at the end which is a wonderful achievement. My daughter commented on how easy you were to work with and how well you explained things, a crucial skill in Maths tutoring! With great thanks'' - Mother of 13+ Student
"I just wanted to thank Keystone Tutors for finding us the wonderful Femke Bolle in December 2013 for online lessons. Femke tutored our twin daughter in Science and Maths during December and January. From the very first session, Femke made them feel very at ease with her, the subjects and the whiteboard application. She taught them so much in such a short space of time. Not only that, but she gave the girls a real enthusiasm for Science. She was also very quick to identify the weak areas in their Maths skills, and really worked on those during the on-line sessions and with the homework she set. Femke built a great report with each of the girls. She has a very relaxed and fun teaching approach, to which the girls responded really well. I can honestly say that the girls' knowledge of, and confidence in both Science and Maths came on leaps and bounds as a result of her tutoring. We are really impressed with the efficient service and on-line tutoring method offered by Keystone Tutors and we will be recommending Keystone Tutors and Femke to friends." Mother of 11+ Maths & Science girls
"The sessions with Femke have been great, and have really helped improve Tom's confidence in Maths. They have been able to go over gaps that have primarily occurred with a teacher at school who was unclear so his understanding of key concepts. I will definitely be recommending Keystone tutors to others and will bear Femke and other tutors from Keystone in mind as Tom begins his GCSEs in September." Mother of Year 9 Maths student
"We are delighted with Femke. Our daughter has made significant progress in practical terms- her average mark in school maths tests has gone up from the mid 60% level to the high 80% level. However, the biggest difference has been in the increased confidence that she is now demonstrating in her mathematical abilities. Femke is a great teacher: supportive, encouraging and clear. Our daughter adores her and always looks forward to their weekly lesson. She is also an excellent role-model." (Mother of 11+ Maths student)
"Our daughter is taking up a place at City of London School for Girls and was offered a place at Francis Holland and on the waiting list for South Hampstead.
