The course will cover the key skills assessed at 13+ level. It will focus on poetry and prose comprehension, and prepare students for the most common question types. They will also learn how to approach the different writing tasks in the test - discursive and creative - and how to plan and add detail to all types of writing. At the end, there will be assessments which will help them understand the marking system and how to assess how strong their own work is.
Comprehension: introduction to answering technique, and 'type of person' question.
Writing: Creative - Description and story differences, and incorporating character detail and action in both.
Comprehension: 'Writer's tools' and 'effect and effective' questions.
Writing: Creative - Using writer's tools and adding setting details
Comprehension: 'Compare and contrast' questions, introduction to poetry
Writing: Discursive - introduce argument structure and what to include in point paragraphs
Comprehension: Rhyme schemes, sound tools and poetic techniques questions
Writing: Discursive - argue/persuade, and explain/inform
Assessment tasks, and using mark schemes to assess work
