The 8+ preparation course will focus on moving year 3 students from the basic 7+ English and Mathematics skills into the higher-level required to be successful at the 8+ stage. Work will be modeled on past paper examples and familiarize students with a range of question types.
Mathematics will begin with a different mental maths concept (X7 tables, 5-digit place value, rounding, factors and multiples) and then focus on one skill area (time duration, fraction OF a number, reading data and pre-algebra). Problem solving will be brought into each lesson, using past exam questions as models.
In English there will be daily spelling, punctuation and grammar work focusing in on various sentence starters, apostrophes for contraction and possession, synonyms and figurative language. Students will explore texts with a focus on making inferences and using the text for evidence in answers. Writing work will cover finding a balance of events and description.
It is expected that students have a clear understanding of the 4 operations and times tables (X2,3,4,5,6,8,9,10) in mathematics. They should be able to write a 3-paragraph piece independently and should have a solid grasp on the Year 1-2 exception spelling words. To get the most out of the course working online, student should have experience working on an electronic platform and be able to focus for the 2-hour duration. We will have a short break at the mid-way point.
This course will be led by one of our professional tutors, Kathleen. Kathleen has been teaching for over 15 years in both primary and secondary schools. She aims to instil self-confidence in her students and also help them develop creative independence.
