Course Description
The 8+ preparation course will focus on moving year 3 students from the basic 7+ English and Mathematics skills into the higher-level required to be successful at the 8+ stage. Work will be modeled on past paper examples and familiarize students with a range of question types.
The 8+ preparation course will focus on moving from the basic 7+ English and Mathematics skills into the higher-level required to be successful at the 8+ stage.
Mathematics will begin with a different mental maths concept (X6 tables, X9, 4-digit place value, adding 9 and 11, X10 X100, counting in 25) and then focus on one skill area (sharing money, decimal tenths, angles, shape rotation and growing patterns). Problem solving will be brought into each lesson, using past exam questions as models.
In English there will be daily spelling, punctuation and grammar work focusing in on root-prefix-suffix, conjunctions, simple and compound sentences, homophones and alliteration. Students will explore texts with a focus on making inferences about the setting and using the text for evidence in answers. Writing work will cover a character description including both an external physical traits and internal personality characteristics.
It is expected that students have a clear understanding of the 4 operations and times tables (X2,3,4,5,6,10) in mathematics. They should be able to write a 3-paragraph piece independently and should have a solid grasp on the Year 1-2 exception spelling words. To get the most out of the course working online, student should have experience working on an electronic platform and be able to focus for the 2-hour duration. We will have a short break at the mid-way point.
Detailed feedback - ?An end of course report is sent on completion detailing the student’s achievements and areas for further work.
This course will be led by one of our professional tutors, Kathleen. Kathleen has been teaching for over 15 years in both primary and secondary schools. She aims to instil self-confidence in her students and also help them develop creative independence.
- Maximum Class Size: We teach in groups of no more than 10 with the average number in our classes being 5
