Speak with Confidence
Tutor: Jack Hawkins
Subject: Public Speaking
Maximum Attendees: 1 (or small workshops)
Course Outline:
One-on-one sessions tutoring students in good communication skills. My intertwined backgrounds in theatre and the law form a perfect basis for helping people develop both the necessary mental approach for formulating the best arguments and answers as well as the self-confidence and vocal ability to carry those ideas across.
Why Students Need It:
From meeting prospective teachers or answering questions at interview to making new friends and debating important issues, communicating with others is of paramount importance. Very often we can fail to get across our points and at the same time miss learning important things from the people we’re trying to communicate to. We stop listening to the others and they stop listening to us. Speak With Confidence can address this.
Why Can I Provide It:
I’ve spent most of my adult life having to communicate. As an actor I’m constantly telling stories. Studying Law required a continual battle of arguments in tutorials and seminars, as well as through mock trials and mooting. As President of my College’s student union I ran committee meetings, met weekly with senior college staff and chaired fortnightly general meetings with attendances often exceeding one hundred people. Not only do I have specific academic training in improving vocal strength and elocution, but I have real life experience of having to put it into practice.
What Would The Sessions Involve:
- Training in vocal strength: specific vocal exercises and warm-ups to improve vocal clarity, volume and sound quality
- Training in communication skills such as posture, eye contact and physicality (emphasis and specifics gauged based on age of student)
- The application of these skills to real activities such as reading poetry, giving presentations (both simple speech reading and specific skills such as presenting while using aids such as Microsoft Powerpoint)
- More relaxed application of communication skills, such as meeting new acquaintances and discussing current affairs.
- Length could vary, as necessary, between weekly sessions of 30 minutes to 1 hour, and one off sessions of 1 to 2 hours.
