Art and Architecture Trips around London for (A-Level Students)
Tutor: Tempe Nell
Subject: History of Art
Maximum Attendees: 6 (but flexible)
Course Outline:
1) A-level History of Art
Are you considering taking History of Art as one of your A-level subjects but feel concerned that you don’t know a Monet from a Manet or an egg tempera from tempura eggs? Well here is a one day course especially designed for you, giving an overview of what the A-level course has in store but with no essays attached.
Walking through two of London’s major art establishments in a fun and informal fashion, we will look in depth at the works of some key artists including Botticelli, Titian, Holbein, Rembrandt, Reynolds, Turner, Manet, Degas and more. We will discuss the styles of the artists, their subject matter and what the difference between a good painting and a great painting is. Through discussing and considering the historical and social contexts of the works we will talk about the different influences over each painting’s appearance and why they are still important to us.
4 hours starting at 10am with an hour's lunch break which includes travel time to Tate Britain from National Gallery. No group size required.
2) A2 History of Art ‘Art and Architecture in Europe and the United States of America 1900 to 1945’
Cubism, Abstraction, Futurism, Fauvism, Expressionism: Modernism. Why do we draw a line between the work of the Impressionists and Realists and the artists whose work falls into the first half of the 20th century? Do we still find these works have the power to surprise and even appal? A refreshing series of gallery visits designed to complement the A2 course where we will get up close with works of art and discuss, analyse and even criticise what we see.
Over the course of four weeks we will explore some of London’s best collections. An excellent opportunity to flex those analytical muscles and converse about the art we are used to reducing to a side of A4.
4 weeks, 2 hour sessions at the weekend, minimum group of 4, max 12.
3) “For we which now behold these present days have eyes to wonder, but lack tongues to praise.”
Interested in art but feel reluctant to comment? Find art discussions between peers leave you stranded? Then why not come along to a friendly and non-judgemental tour around the National Gallery where we will look at paintings and discuss some of the ‘why’s of art history. Why are some people so mad about Monet? Why revere the work of someone unrecognised in his or her own time? Why is so much money spent on art when it is essentially useless?
This is a chance to ask some of your own why’s and consider others you might not have contemplated yet. A day-long session for adults who want to become familiar with and expand knowledge about some of Europe’s key artists.
4 hours starting at 10am with an hour's lunch break. Groups of up to six.
