Mark Howells
I predominantly teach: GCSE Physics, AS/A2 Physics
My general subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Science (Year 6-9), Critical Thinking, Oxbridge Preparation, SEN, Study Skills
Experience
Three years of secondary school teaching experience across all Key Stages. I began teaching at an inner-city London school but have most recently been Head of Physics and joint Head of Department at an international school in the Middle East. This year I have specialised in A Level/GCSE teaching, for which my role as an Edexcel examiner has helped greatly.
During this time I have continued to tutor outside of school covering Biology, Chemistry and Physics across a number of IGCSE/GCSE boards and syllabi. I tutored Edexcel A Level Physics extensively. I have taught at broad range of abilities from Oxbridge candidates to pupils simply wishing to achieve a passing grade.
Recent Keystone Work:
AS/A2 Physics, IB Physics: IB Physics (Foundation) in preparation for resit. (Started: August 2011)
Biography
After graduating from Trinity College Oxford with a first class Masters in Engineering I reflected upon the opportunities education had afforded me, the horizons it broadened and the skills it had developed. It was such a valuable gift I decided to teach.
I’ve now taught in a variety of schools from an inner-city London school to more recently completing a period as Head of Physics in the Middle East. I have tutored for over five years, gaining increasing satisfaction from watching young peoples’ mind develop and confidence grow, as I myself become more experienced.
Education is a crucial part of any persons’ life and as such I approach tutoring with both rigour and passion!
Personal Approach
Building self confidence and fostering a love for the subject is my overall aim. To do this I endeavour to establish a close working relationship with each tutee based on trust and their confidence in me to facilitate their exam success as well as address their wider educational needs.
Thought process, rather than content, lies at the heart of my ambition to develop self sufficient learners yet I appreciate than content and technique cannot be understated when preparing for exams.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I am currently preparing to return to the UK and am looking forward my new teaching post at Latymer Upper School.
Testimonials
17/10/2011: “It’s going incredibly well!” (Father of IB Physics student)
I have tutored in excess of twenty individuals and have the contact details of many parents who would be glad to provide testimonials. Below is one testimonial from a teaching colleague whose daughter I tutored.
'what to say? I know I won't be able to replace you.
Hannah hated physics before you started working with her. Now she 'gets it' and it's her favourite A Level subject. You not only made sure she had a good grasp of the fundamentals - and you always took her systematically from first principles to application - but you also tried to stretch her. You tried to raise her game beyond the basics so she could be prepared for tough interviews and the much more competitive environment ahead of her if she gets her dream university place. You also tried to make her more conscious of the learning strategies needed for efficient and successful studying.
I am sorry you won't be around for her A2 year to test her understanding, to challenge her and keep her focussed. Hannah says that after she covered topics with you, they stuck in her mind in a way that they didn't at school. She says you made physics interesting.'
