Experience
I have taught at a secondary school since September 2006, and also have experience of tutoring individuals in preparation for exams and taught Greek at the King's College London Summer School in Classics in 2008. In this time I have encountered a vast range of students, ranging from Gifted and Talented students achieving at a level far above that of their age-group, to students who are finding their schoolwork very difficult, and need extra time and help with it, to English as an Additional Language students and the severely handicapped. I have developed strategies for helping students in each of these groups.
Biography
Having graduated from Oxford University in 2006 with a degree in Classics and Sanskrit, I started work as a teacher of Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation at Brentwood School, Essex. I obtained Qualified Teacher Status in December 2008, through the Graduate Teacher Programme (an on-the-job teacher training course). This is now my third and final year as a Classics teacher, a role which I have found to be fascinating and extremely rewarding. At the end of the school year (July 2009), I am due to leave classroom teaching to embark on a career in photography, which will give me more time to devote to tutoring.
Personal Approach
I believe that the key to effective learning is first assessing the personal needs of the individual student, then feeding this information back into the content and methods of teaching. My style of teaching is friendly and approachable. I encourage students to ask as many questions as possible, and aim to motivate them by making activities interesting and varied.
