Emily Craig
I predominantly teach: GCSE Latin, Ancient Greek (all age groups)
My general subjects: English, Latin
Experience
I have experience teaching at primary, secondary and degree level.
Primary/Prep level:
I provide tutoring fora boy who is preparing for his Latin Common Entrance exam. Initially lacking in confidence, he's now enthusiastic about Latin and has made excellent progress with the subject. I've just finished a series of Latin sessions with another 11 year old boy. He's dyslexic and I adapted my lesson plans to suit his learning needs. For several months whilst I was at school, I volunteered one lunchtime a week as a classroom assistant at Sacred Heart Primary School in Hammersmith. I worked with 2 or 3 children at a time, teaching them Latin as part of the Minimus project.
Secondary level:
I've provided tuition for a boy studying Ancient Greek A/S level. We met for 1 hour once a week at his home and worked through his homework for that week. I also produced weekly tests for him that he could complete in his own time. Last year, I tutored a 13 year old boy preparing for his end-of-year Latin exams and, despite struggling at first, in the end he came fourth in his class. I'm currently tutoring a boy from Eton who is working towards his Greek GCSE exams and a 17 year old girl due to take A/S Latin.
Undergraduate level:
Last summer, I tutored an Oxford undergraduate who wanted help with her Latin translation and her essay writing.

Biography
I recently graduated from Oxford University with a high 2.1 in Classics.
Before university I attended Surbiton High Girls' School until the age of 16 and then I moved to St Paul's Girls' for my A-levels. I decided to move schools because I wanted to be challenged intellectually and to be in a place where education for education's sake is championed.
Personal Approach
I prepare for each of my lessons, producing worksheets or selecting a text that I think would be helpful for the lesson's theme. These materials help me to see whether a student has understood a particular grammar point or whether they're comfortable with certain key principles. Sometimes my students prefer to work through their homework or look over a piece of work they've done in class. When this is the case, I try to draw out more general points from a specific piece so that they can apply what they've learned to future pieces of work. During the course of a tutoring session, I'm looking for a student to demonstrate their understanding and I try to create the space for them to do this.
Although I think a secure grasp of grammar is a fundamental requirement of succeeding with Latin and Ancient Greek, I always select passages that are interesting from a literary or historical perspective, depending on a student's particular interest. I find a sense of humour to be very helpful in terms of building a rapport between myself and the student I'm teaching. I also like to introduce variety into lessons in order to encourage intellectual flexibility.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I'm currently studying for an MA in Broadcast Journalism at City University in London.
