Charles Hotham
I predominantly teach: AS/A2 History
My general subjects: Essay Writing, Oxbridge Preparation, Study Skills
Experience
I have been teaching for five years in a central London comprehensive, holding various positions including Head of History, joint Head of Sixth Form and Assistant Headteacher. I have some tutoring experience in English GCSE and supporting students with university applications.
Recent tutoring successes (2011) include: three A-level History students scored 94%, 92% and 85% in tutored units and two other students improved grades on tutored retakes from D to B. A-level History retake record remains either 2 grade improvement or A grade achievement.
Biography
Having studied History, French and Geography at A-level I was surprised and pleased to have the prospect of an application to Oxford suggested to me by one of my teachers. A hugely enjoyable and successful three years later, getting involved in journalism, politics and much else, made me recognise the value of education in the broadest sense and encouraged me to apply for a PGCE. I have been teaching in a central London comprehensive for five years now, seeing results improve from about 40% to 98% A*-C at GCSE. I have also spent two of those years advising students on their university application and overseeing the UCAS process as joint Head of Sixth Form.
Personal Approach
Alongside my passion for education as a principle and my determination to support those who need it most, I enjoy teaching most of all for the relationships with young people. This has been the foundation of my success and enjoyment, particularly in supporting students one-to-one with either their academic work or their career and university planning.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I'm a civil servant.
