Biography
Born in Holland, I spent some of my childhood living abroad, in Canada, Nigeria and Holland. I went to prep school as a boarder at Port Regis in Dorset, followed by Sherborne School for Girls, where I developed a love of music, achieving Grade 8 recorders (distinction), flute (merit) and piano, and of Classics. Having achieved 5 As at A-level (Latin, Greek, History, English, Physics), I went to Oxford to study Classics, where I have been on and off for the last nine years. During that time, I spent nine months teaching Classics at Marlboro College, a Liberal Arts college in the USA, and three months each in Pisa and Munich as part of my doctorate.
Personal Approach
I tailor my approach to the individual student. The aim is to understand their learning needs and their character, and to work with their interests and ambitions to make them see the excitement of the subject, because learning is much easier when it is enjoyable. I also tease out what study methods work best for each student, so that they can consolidate what they have learnt with me in their own time.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I am currently finishing a DPhil in Classics at University College, Oxford. The title of my thesis is 'Plato and Lucretius as Philosophical Literature: A Comparative Study'. In the last two months, I have been living part-time in Oxford and part-time in London, working as a Policy Intern with the Liberal Democrats. I hope to begin a law conversion course in September 2012 and train as a solicitor.
