Biography
I was born and grew up in Surrey, and went to school in Wimbledon. Having spent school holiday time, and much of my gap year working with children of all ages in holiday camps, both in the UK and in the USA, I went on to study Pyschology at Southampton University. I specialized in Applied Behavioural Analysis, training as a Behavioural Therapist with children with Autism.
For 14 years, I have gone on to work with over 30 children and families as a tutor / supervisor on home-based programmes, and in approximately 20 schools in both the British and American teaching systems.
Aside from my work with children, I have always painted, and after two years of developing my art work alongside my tutoring, I moved to paint professionally and was signed to the country's leading art publisher and dealer of commercial fine art (De Montfort Fine Art). I now exhibit in over 40 galleries nationwide and beyond and have been very lucky to have turned a hobby into a succesful career.
I have, however, continued tutoring within the field of Autism / Asperger's Syndrome, and teaching art for a small number of hours a week more recently, and very much enjoy the balance that comes from combining my two passions.
I am married and have two children of my own.
Personal Approach
With every child I have taught, whether they have been on the Autistic spectrum or not, I have worked with the individual, adapting all exercises and target skills to suit personal strengths. Confidence and self-esteem are always a priority - as I do not believe progress can me made without each child feeling good about what they are doing. I do believe the best results I have seen have been from children whose families have played an active role in driving their child's progress onwards and upwards, bolstering their confidence, and I always welcome input and direction from parents and schools. A 'team effort' is essential!
What I do when I am not tutoring
I am currently spending the majority of my time working as a professional artist, as I have been for the last 3 years. I also spend one session a week supporting a young 10 year old boy with Asperger's Syndrome at his home, working on promotion of self-esteem, and offering 'mentor' support. In addition, I teach art lessons for a private client once a week.
