Rob Carter
I predominantly teach: GCSE Maths, AS/A2 Maths
My general subjects: Maths, Physics
Keystone Summary: Rob is a friendly Mathematician who especially likes working with Advanced Mathematicians, e.g. on Cambridge STEP papers.
Small warning: I am an actor, or pursue another profession, which can sometimes affect my availability.
Experience
I've been tutoring for 2 years now. I've only done Maths, but have covered GCSE, all A-level modules, most Further Maths A-Level modules, University application (especially Cambridge) and degree level Maths, all on various boards and syllabuses.
Recent Keystone Work:
GCSE Maths, GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry, GCSE Physics: iGCSE Science & Maths crammer weekend (Started: November 2011)
GCSE Maths, GCSE Chemistry: GCSE Maths and GCSE Chemistry over the Christmas holidays (Started: December 2011)
AS/A2 Physics: AS Physics (Started: January 2012)
Biography
I was at Cranleigh School from 2001-2006. Academically I got 11 A*s at GCSE and 4 A's at A-level in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Economics, and went on to get a 1st in Maths at Cambridge. I left Cambridge in 2009 and have been studying at Drama School at LAMDA since. I've just finished the 2 year acting course and am hoping to become an actor.
Personal Approach
I tailor every session to the student's demands. I will only decide on topics to teach if they have nothing in particular to discuss or ask me. I find talking about areas of Maths is hugely beneficial before we start tackling questions, getting the student to discuss areas in their own words, which usually highlights any fundamental misunderstandings. I also set some questions each week to see if they can remember and apply what we covered a few days after the session.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I've just left Drama School so I will be auditioning, hopefully performing, taking drama workshops, and performing comedy gigs from time to time. I'll basically always have a flexible schedule, and always have time in my week to tutor, as I envisage this as being my primary source of income.
Testimonials
21/12/2011: I would be delighted to employ him again should we need another weekend of intense exam preparation in the future (Mother of GCSE student)
21/12/2011: The lessons were a great success. Rob is an excellent tutor who hit it off with my children straight away (Mother of GCSE students)
''Marcus found Rob's sessions hugely beneficial; they were thorough, engaging, and tailored specifically to Marcus' needs. He felt more confident in all areas of Maths and went on to study at Queens' College, Cambridge.'' David Hughes-Hallet, Nov 2011
''I have employed Rob Carter to assist my 12 year old son, William, with his Common Entrance preparations.
William was very reluctant to have extra help, despite lacking confidence in his abilities and finding some areas of the curriculum very tricky.
Rob has been very beneficial. William has thoroughly enjoyed his sessions and is actively interested in having further help. Rob seems to engage extremely well with him, making the sessions, after a long day at school, seem very manageable.
William’s confidence has improved in leaps and bounds and he is performing at a much better level.
I would not hesitate to recommend him to anybody looking for CE tutoring.'' Mary Swan, Oct 2011
Hi Rob,
You tutored me for a couple of sessions in may/june this year, and I thought i'd let you know my result. I got an A star (yay)! I'm pretty sure I owe that to you, so thank you for being so patient with me even over the little things!
I hope you've had a nice summer and that your acting is going well,
Alice

Hi Rob,
Hope you had a nice summer. I somehow managed to get an A in maths particularly thanks to you! I was wondering if you would still be able to tutor me next year?
Thanks
Poppy

Rob taught my daughter Alice Alphonse in the lead up to her iGCSE Maths Exams this summer (AQA Board).
He was a first class tutor and without doubt helped her achieve an A* Grade in the exams. He was approachable, very knowledgeable and had excellent strategies to help Alice unlock the more difficult aspects of the course. He had done his homework extensively before he arrived for the first session and came armed with papers and ideas so that time was not wasted. Importantly, he had thought about where the tricky bits of the exam paper might be and where there was opportunity to gain the all-important extra marks.
Alice felt she was able to ask him any question and he never became impatient or dismissive. It was a very collaborative experience for her, which boosted her confidence hugely. We felt she came out of the sessions with new self-belief, as well as strategies to cope with areas that she had previously found difficult. She now has gone on to study Maths for A level and I know she would say that Rob was partly responsible for enabling her to do this.
Rob was always impeccable with his timing, tremendously courteous and very friendly. He is a lovely person who is very genuine and clearly cares about doing his very best. We have already recommended him to friends of ours to help their children with maths and their feedback mirrors everything I have written above.
I have no hesitation in recommending Rob as a maths tutor and would be happy to talk to anyone who is considering working with him.

Rob Carter came to tutor my son Tom for GCSE maths, which he is due to take in a few months. Rob spent 2 hours with Tom and was patient, thoughtful and extremely clear in his explanations. He also appreciates there are different learning styles and different approaches to problems and solutions. Tom struck up a good rapport with Rob and found the session extremely useful. He now feels confident about subjects which were previously somewhat shaky. We will certainly have Rob back for a refresher before the exam.
