Biography
Throughout my secondary, further and higher education, I have always enjoyed learning, partly due to parental encouragement and partly due to some wonderful teachers. I won several academic prizes at school and was fortunate to gain a place at Bristol University, where I fine-tuned my writing skills, my verbal communication skills and my individual research skills. I immersed myself in university life, joining several societies and volunteering for the national student helpline. My interest in supporting young people continued after graduation; I became a guidance counsellor in secondary schools across west London, helping teenagers with a range of social, emotional and learning support needs in order to help them reach their full potential. I completed the NVQ Level 4 in Advice and Guidance (for Young People) as part of my training. After working with teenagers for several years, I decided to broaden my experience and I became a Learning Mentor in a primary school, where I worked with a caseload of fifteen students across Years 1 to 6, providing practical and emotional support to those who required extra help and encouragement in order to produce their best work. I completed a Master’s Degree in Performance in 2007, which I have since used in a number of creative ways to further support and motivate young people.
Personal Approach
I believe that children and young people produce their best work when they are feeling relaxed, confident and happy. I aim to create a learning environment that is supportive, warm, and free from stress. I really enjoy watching students' imaginations roam freely and it is a pleasure to see a young person understanding something that they had previously felt overwhelmed or 'beaten' by. Each child is unique, and therefore my methods are always tailored to suit the learning style and personality of the individual child. I enjoy finding out what makes my students tick, and I use their existing strengths in order to build on the areas they need help with. My end goal is to give young people the self-belief and the skills to tackle the work on their own, but also to know how and when to ask for support, should they need it.
What I do when I am not tutoring
When I am not tutoring I undertake occasional acting work (I co-run a successful theatre company) and I am involved in project work that is generally related to promoting the well-being of children and young people(e.g. mentoring).
