Biography
Education
I was educated in Scotland, receiving all As in my Highers (English, Latin, History, Maths, French, Classical Studies and History); in my final year I received an A in Advanced Higher Latin, and As in A-Level English and Maths, completing the AS & A2 components in one year instead of the usual two. nb: Highers are Scottish exams somewhere in between AS and the A2; Advanced Higher is equivalent to the A2. I spent a year at Glasgow University studying Latin, English, History of Art, Politics and Philosophy, passing my first year undergraduate degree exams. I left Glasgow to take up my place at Oxford and received a 2:i in English Language and Literature from Oxford. I am currently studying the Graduate Diploma in Law at City University.
Debating & public speaking
A former representative of Scotland at the World Schools Debating Championships in 2005, and laterally having represented Glasgow and City University in Inter Varsity debating, I have been coaching debating for several years, firstly at my alma matter the year after I left school, and also in South Africa in 2009. I am therefore able to teach debating, public speaking and speech writing for all ages.
I am currently tutoring before beginning a training contract with top international law firm Freshfields.
Personal Approach
I am an experienced tutor, having taught all ages and abilities in a range of subject for a range of qualifications. I am particularly good at motivating recalcitrant male students, winning their respect with my combination of academic rigorousness and fun.
It is my experience that in arts and humanities subjects, students often understand the basic information and facts, and fall down in their communication of it to examiners. Communication and knowledge are not mutually exclusive concepts - good understanding and knowledge of a subject is engendered by being able to articulate that.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I am a law student and I'm commencing work at a top international commercial law firm in a few years time. Until then, I'm pursuing my political interests, blogging on matters which interest me. I am also keenly interested in film, opera and theatre, and a keen sportsman, enjoying boxing, marathon running, triathlon, rugby, football and squash.
