Biography
I was born in New-York and lived in Guinea, Niger, Cameroon, Senegal and Morocco because of my father’s position in the United Nations (UN Development Program) and his assignment to those countries. Having grown up around very poor and deprived communities, I have become very sensitive to their problems and needs. What struck me most was the lack of essential resources and skills needed to enable them to meet their basic needs and become self-sufficient in a way that would not harm the environment.
In light of that realization, I decided to dedicate myself to help solve such problems and provide the means and the training needed by such isolated and poor communities. I believe that Mechanical Engineering would not only give me the knowledge and tools I would need to perform field repairs and initiate energy saving/generating techniques, but also train my mind at different levels of problem solving and effective management. My ambition is to help tackle the 2050 challenge and help the poor in developing countries improve their standards of living through the research and development of new and renewable energy harvesting devices and building efficient infrastructures and training facilities.
After being awarded a French Scientific Baccalaureate with honours in Senegal, I moved to Ifrane, Morocco where I spent a gap year at Al-Akhawayn University and took courses such as ‘Skills for learning and research’, ‘ Computer skills for independent learning’, ‘ Interpersonal skills and social interaction’ and ‘ Academic writing’ as well as Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology. These courses provided me with the academic tools I would need to pursue my studies in the UK. I then moved to Nottingham where I was admitted to study Mechanical Engineering and obtained a BEng with honours.
After my second year during which I obtained an average of 72.2%, I was awarded a research position over the summers of 2008 and then again in 2009, giving me a valuable insight into advanced research methodologies and techniques as well as the drive to pursue my studies to a research level. Details of both positions can be found in the attached CV.
I have held several positions of responsibility in my high-school such as class president for two years running and founder and president of a strategy game club for three years running. Since moving to Nottingham, I have held positions such as Captain of the Nottingham University Amateur Boxing Squad for the last two years .I also had some experience in the construction industry as a roofer.
I now have an MSc from the Imperial College of Science as I would like a fourth IMechE accredited course year to be added to my qualifications and application for Chartership. I am now in the second year of my PhD at the Imperial College. I am confident that the skills I will gain will enable me not only to work productively in the UK towards the 2050 challenge but also to carry out my ambition of helping with the sustainable development of poor countries, ideally through the United Nations or other development institutions.
Personal Approach
My personal approach is initially, and very importantly to develop a rapport between my students and myself, after which barriers such as a lack of confidence or motivation can be surmounted much more effectively.
An engineer is a scientist trained to solve problems in different ways using every tool at his disposal, which I inspire my teaching methods on. I teach by making my students question what they are taught instead of lecturing them, which develops a thinking process that I believe to be key in truly mastering any subject.
A combination of this thinking process, some fun and the ability to easily relate Sciences and Mathematics to the real world results in my students gaining a significant deal of self-motivation and confidence in their own abilities. I believe this to be the most important lesson that I impart my students with.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I am now a PhD student at the Imperial College of London performing research on Solid Oxide Fuel Cells.
