Biography
I hold a first class undergraduate degree in English and French and a Master's with distinction in English from Oxford University. I have tutored in a wide range of subjects and contexts, both while pursuing my studies and while working as an associate at a London-based investment consultancy.
Personal Approach
My tutoring style is upbeat and approachable. For short term revision, one of my major priorities is to help pupils create a 'road map' conceptualising the challenges presented by their exams. Where exam performance has been compromised by low self-esteem, my aim is to counter pupils’ preconceptions about their academic limitations by identifying and building upon their distinctive strengths. Especially where more time is available, I work to develop in pupils a curiosity which helps them get beyond the often dreary demands of their textbooks and achieve a greater degree of imaginative and critical independence.
Although I have no formal training in helping pupils with learning difficulties I have significant experience, both personal and professional, in tackling these and associated confidence issues.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I have just embarked on a PhD (working on Shakespeare) and am continuing my tutoring work alongside my degree.
Testimonials
''Julia Maxfield has visited us twice in the capacity of Tutor to my 18 year old daughter, Daisy, who is sitting her A Levels this summer. Daisy found her extremely helpful, enthusiastic and very encouraging. From our point of view she was very flexible over timings and was prepared to take on all the challenges thrown at her - i.e. different texts in English and areas of Classical Civilisation that may have been less familiar together with a student who at times struggled to concentrate and absorb information! She was generally good to have around and certainly has given Daisy some confidence which she desperately needed.''
''Julia has been brilliant so far; lovely personality and approach to teaching, extremely prompt and well-prepared for the lessons. We are very pleased.''
''I wanted to say that your advice and coaching brought fantastic results – Anna’s personal statement proved to be successful and was favoured by the law departments in all five universities – Cambridge, UCL, LSE, Nottingham and Manchester !''
''We found Julia to be very reliable and conscientious. She quickly gained Serena's confidence and made real progress in developing her Maths. So much so that she achieved an A* at Common Entrance - somewhat to our amazement.''
