Our Approach
Russell Group Tutors has a unique approach to private tuition. What makes us different is that we try to involve the student's school in the process as much as possible. Have a read of the RGT 6-point approach below.RGT has a 6-point approach to private tuition.
Here is the framework; please see underneath for further information.
- Initial conversation
- Assessment (optional)
- Conversation with the school (optional)
- Selection of a tutor
- Trial lesson
- Regular feedback
1. Initial conversation.
This is usually done over the phone, though we are happy to come to your home. Here we establish the state-of-affairs, and discover exactly what you are looking for. We like to find out as much as possible about the student so as to more accurately select a tutor.
Is she/he into sports, for example?
Is she/he shy or outgoing?
How does he/she learn?
We select the tutors who will treat your child as an individual learner.
2. Assessment (optional).
This is non-essential but ideally Will prefers to conduct an initial assessment at your home to make sure that a tutor is appointed who will suit the learning style and personality of your child. Will is a prep school teacher at Fulham Prep School. He uses the assessment to inform the selection of the tutor, and to set some reasonable objectives for the course of tuition.
3. School (optional).
RGT's preferred approach - and what works best in their experience - is to have the school on side throughout the process. Will works as a prep school teacher himself; teachers (should) know the strengths and weaknesses of a student better than anyone and can advise on the approach. It sometimes only needs to be an exchange of emails or a 5-min phone conversation but it prevents the tutor and teacher working at odds to one another.
4. Selection of a tutor.
After points 1-3, RGT tends to select the tutor they think best suited to the task, though they can offer a selection of tutors if desired. RGT will provide you with a tutor profile that includes an individual tutor profile, photo, references.
5. Trial lesson.
The first lesson is only charged if you're satisfied. You will speak to RGT on the evening of the first lesson to see what you - and, just as importantly, the student - made of the experience.
6. Continual feedback.
Tutors have to give a monthly progress report, which will be passed to you. On top of that, RGT will maintain a close involvement with the assignment, contacting you usually every 2-3 weeks to ensure that tutors are correctly prepared and that tuition is progressing.
